BAS lodgement is one of those obligations that quietly grows teeth if you fall behind. Here's how to keep it simple.
What the BAS report captures
Your Business Activity Statement reports:
- GST collected and paid
- PAYG withholding from employees
- PAYG income tax instalments
The three rules for staying on-time
1. Know your due dates
Lodgement cycles run monthly or quarterly. Mark every due date in your calendar the day you register — not the week it's due.
2. Close the books before you prepare
Reconcile and finalise the period before you start the BAS. Preparing a BAS from incomplete books is how errors creep in.
3. Keep a proof file
Every figure on the BAS should trace back to a reconcile, a payroll run, or a GST report. If you can't show how you got a number, neither can an auditor.
Staying audit-ready isn't about perfection. It's about a paper trail you can explain.
If you're unsure whether you're on the right cycle, or your last BAS felt rushed, that's the signal to get a second pair of eyes on it.
